Theatre is a subjective subject – discuss

Theatre is a subjective subject. Who is to say whether something is good or bad. To quote Shakespeare:

All that glitters is not gold Hell is empty and all the devils are here. Now is the winter of our discontent. The lady doth protest too much, methinks. These violent delights have violent ends...Brevity is the soul of wit. Good night, good night! parting is such sweet sorrow, That I shall say good night till it be morrow.Fair is foul, and foul is fair: Hover through the fog and filthy air.Something is rotten in the state of Denmark. A plague o' both your houses!

There are those who are musical theatre enthusiasts and have never seen a play in their lives! Those that fall asleep in the theatre when the famous Kenneth Brannagh is on stage. Jesu what haste!

But how can you not be attracted by the bustle of West End Theatre? The bright lights of Broadway?

Broadway 2018

To be on stage is a dream for many. They study for years and only a handful would get a lucky break. However, many have gone on to be rising stars of stage and screen, but always starting in the theatre first. Some small shows on the fringe, acting for free.

Broadway is opening up after the pandemic, and slowly the West End too, plays are good but who doesn’t like musicals? Some exciting musical theatre to come out for a long time is the Mary Poppins musical and also Heathers the musical. Performances are at half-capacity but hopefully with lockdown lifting the theatre industry can return to normal.

It has been severely missed and the industry has been up in arms. Even Lloyd Webber wanted to sue, but rest assured as long as everybody plays it safe. We should be able to enjoy everything that is required.

But back to plays, Samuel Beckett. a very famous playwright once said:

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better. Where I am, I don't know, I'll never know, in the silence you don't know, you must go on, I can't go on, I'll go on. They give birth astride of a grave, the light gleams an instant, then it's night once more. Nothing happens. Nobody comes, nobody goes. It’s awful. Habit is a great deadener. Dance first. Think later. It's the natural order. We are all born mad. Some remain so. The sun shone, having no alternative, on the nothing new. You're on earth. There's no cure for that. Nothing is funnier than unhappiness, I grant you that. Yes, yes, it's the most comical thing in the world.

Wise words, wise words indeed

Viva la theatre! Break a leg!
